Mastering Conductor Ampacity Using the 2026 NEC
13 Topics • 21 Lessons
Learn how to select, correct, adjust, and verify conductor ampacity using the 2026 NEC, including practical examples using Table 310.16, 310.15(B)(1)(1), and 310.15(C)(1).
This mini-course walks electricians, inspectors, designers, and exam-prep students through the conductor ampacity process using the 2026 National Electrical Code.
Students will learn how to start with the correct base ampacity, apply ambient temperature correction factors using 310.15(B)(1)(1), apply adjustment factors for more than three current-carrying conductors using 310.15(C)(1), and verify the final ampacity against terminal temperature limitations, overcurrent protection rules, and practical installation conditions.
The course is divided into multiple stages. Each stage builds on the previous one. Students should complete each lesson and pass the required knowledge check before moving to the next stage.
Course stages include:
Stage 1: Understanding Base Ampacity
Stage 2: Using Table 310.16 Correctly
Stage 3: Ambient Temperature Correction Using 310.15(B)(1)(1)
Stage 4: Current-Carrying Conductor Adjustment Using 310.15(C)(1)
Stage 5: Combining Correction and Adjustment Factors
Stage 6: Checking Termination Temperature Limitations
Stage 7: Final Ampacity Verification and Design Decisions
Stage 8: Mastery Challenge Calculation
By the end of this course, students should be able to perform a complete conductor ampacity calculation and explain why the final allowable ampacity is based on the actual conditions of use.
