Question:

A 125-volt, 20-amp receptacle is installed in the ceiling of a dwelling-unit garage to supply a garage door opener. Is GFCI protection required?

GFCI protection is required.

Under NEC 210.8(A)(2), in dwelling-unit garages, all 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-amp receptacles must have GFCI protection. The rule is based on the location (garage), not the mounting height or whether it’s on the ceiling for a door opener.
